Weather and walks

Weather and walks

East Dorset Group makes every effort to run the walks given in its programme and the walks will take place in most weather conditions as long as more than two walkers turn up to join the leader. However, the leader can cancel or shorten a walk at their discretion, for example if the weather is very bad or a path is impassable. Please let the Programme Co-ordinator know as soon as possible if you need to cancel your walk.

Because of the possibility of a cancellation due to self-isolation of the leader, walkers are advised to check with GWEM (the Group Walks and Events Manager) as near as possible to the time of the walk to see if it is still taking place.

Joining walks in bad weather

Before you set out for any of our walks soon after heavy rain, or in poor weather conditions, it would be worth your while to check the current situation on a suitable local website.

If you are concerned that extreme weather conditions might prevent a walk taking place, you can contact the relevant leader in advance of setting out (the phone numbers are in the Group programme). In such cases, please consider the road conditions that you could encounter on your way to the start and also for getting home if conditions deteriorate.

Other reasons for changes to walk details

If a leader is unable to lead a walk, a substitute from within our group might be found and will arrive on the day to lead the walk.

In the case of the leader failing to arrive at the start of a walk, say because of a traffic hold up or a car break-down, the members present may decide to select a suitable volunteer from those present to lead a walk and in pre-covid times, this was the usual procedure. However, under current Ramblers guidelines for wallk leading, they will not have the correct paperwork so it is not advised.
