Jurassic Coast Women's Trek

3rd June 2017 is the date for this 26 mile trek from Swanage. See here for more information.

Weather and walks

East Dorset Group makes every effort to run the walks given in its programme and the walks will take place in most weather conditions as long as more than two walkers turn up to join the leader. However, the leader can cancel or shorten a walk at their discretion, for example if the weather is very bad or a path is impassable. If the leader decides to cancel a walk they will endeavour to get to the start to tell anyone else who turns up that it is cancelled, but in the case of fog, snow or ice, that might not be possible if the leader cannot get there safely on the day.

Joining walks in bad weather

Before you set out for any of our walks soon after heavy rain, or in poor weather conditions, it would be worth your while to check the current situation on a site like Dorset Travel News.

If you are concerned that extreme weather conditions might prevent a walk taking place, you can contact the relevant leader in advance of setting out (the phone numbers are in the Group programme). In such cases, please consider the road conditions that you could encounter on your way to the start and also for getting home if conditions deteriorate. Non-members or new members can check on walks by emailing us.

Other reasons for changes to walk details

If a leader is unable to lead a walk, a substitute from within our group may be found and will arrive on the day to lead the walk.

In the case of the leader failing to arrive at the start of a walk, say because of a traffic hold up or a car break-down, the members present may decide to select a suitable volunteer from those present to lead a walk. In practice this may well be another of the Group’s leaders who is present or another member who knows the area. In such circumstances, the substitute leader would not be obliged to take the route planned by the intended leader and the walk may be shorter than planned but must not be longer. In such circumstances the walk will still be covered by the Ramblers’ insurance company.

Wessex Wanderer Walks

Experienced leaders from The Ramblers offer public, guided walks from railway stations between Bristol and Weymouth. You pay the rail fare, but there is no charge for the walk. The programme of walks appears here from spring onwards each year.
