News

Annual General Meeting, East Dorset Group

It has now been confirmed that the East Dorset Group Annual General Meeting will be held on Monday 22 November 2021 face to face at the Skittle Alley, Hamworthy Club, Magna Road, Canford Magna, starting at 7.30 pm.

To replace the usual talk, one of our members will present a slide show called An Alpine Trek. The pictures are from a walker's 388 mile adventure from Lake Geneva, across the Alps to the shore of the Mediterranean Sea.

Social distancing will be observed, hand sanitiser will be available and participants are encouraged to wear a mask.

Annual General Meeting, Dorset Area

The Ramblers Dorset Area AGM will be held on Saturday 27th November 2021 at 2 pm using Zoom. Here is the agenda, which gives joining details. The Acting Secretary for Dorset Area explains that once registered, you will receive the papers (annual report etc) before the meeting, to enable you to read them through, and send in any questions arising.

The Acting Secretary wishes to draw your attention to Agenda item 5 d), together with the Notes. Going into abeyance, if a new secretary is not elected, would NOT mean that Dorset Area will cease functioning, or be ’wound up’, but rather that it will give us some breathing space, and enable us to consider what opportunities this might offer.

Local Access Forum

Do you want to help improve Dorset's great outdoors for future generations? The Local Access Forum is recruiting new members. Please see this poster and submit your application before 7th November.

Area Picnic Walks 2021

Area picnic day was 1st August. East Dorset Group had an enjoyable walk in perfect weather and we met up with walkers from other groups at the Mary Baxter memorial stone on Knowle Hill.

Purbeck Plod 2021

Just a reminder that sadly we have had to take the decision to cancel the 2021 Purbeck Plod.

Wessex Wanderer Walks 2021

After an absence of a year, there will be a short programme of Wessex Wanderer Railway Walks in 2021. The walks are led by experienced members of the Ramblers and walkers can claim free Wessex Wanderers souvenir pens.

These walks start from stations along the Bristol to Weymouth railway line and for full details please refer to: the Wessex Wanderers website or telephone 0117 933 4998.

In case of any Covid restrictions which may be in place booking is essential and numbers on walks will be limited.

Walking from 19th July

The UK government roadmap for lifting lockdown in England is now at Step 4. People can walk together outdoors, and Ramblers group walks and volunteer activities can take place.

The Ramblers is still updating its guidelines. You can see their latest advice here.

The new countryside code

An updated Countryside Code has been issued. Some of it responds to problems that have occurred in the countryside during the last year.

Finding out changes to walks and ad hoc walks

Members are now asked to look at GWEM to find out when walk details have changed, walks have been cancelled or ad hoc walks added.

Good news

We have heard from The Ramblers that group walks, path maintenance, site visits and other outdoor volunteer activities can now resume in England from Monday 29 March.

Please look for our walks on GWEM, the Group Walks and Events Manager, here to find out if a walk you want to join will be available even if it is listed in our printed programme. Please note that some walks might still have booking limits for the number of participants.

For data protection purposes we are no longer allowed to keep a list of members' email addresses in order to advise them of changes.

New Lockdown announced on 4th January

Following the latest government announcement, The Ramblers have informed us that all Ramblers walks will be suspended from Tuesday 5 January.

Up to date information can be found here.

Changes to walking rules from 30th December 2020

Here is The Ramblers latest advice. Ramblers group walks in Tier 4 areas are cancelled while group led walks in Tiers 1, 2 and 3 can go ahead in the same way as they were. People walking with friends can go out with 6 people from 6 households except those in Tier 4 who can go out with only one other person.

Please note that BCP and Hampshire are now in Tier 4, which means that some of our walks will not be able to take place.

Social distancing on walks

The Ramblers has now issued further guidance on social distancing on walks. They have advised leaders whose walks attract more than ten to twelve walkers that their walks should be sub-divided into groups of 6. We are sure that you will give your support to the leaders of walks as they manage this rather difficult guidance.

Jubilee Trail

Here is some news that is not about Covid! A new 2020 edition of the "The Dorset Jubilee Trail" has just been published. See the Dorset Area website for further information and a list of stockists.

End of lockdown, 2nd December

The Ramblers have now commented on the new regulations following the end of the second lockdown. As shown here we are allowed to continue to lead walks in groups of up to 30 on and after 2nd December because Ramblers and Walking for Health group walks are categorised as “organised, outdoor physical activity events”.

In East Dorset Group, we intend to take advantage of this and return to the programme of walks shown in your latest programme from 2nd December.

East Dorset Group 2020 AGM

Due to current Covid-19 regulations, it will not be possible to hold our 2020 AGM in public on 17th November as stated in our programme. Please see our AGM 2020 page to find out how your committee is managing this situation.

East Dorset Group 3rd November

The advice we have received from The Ramblers is that all Ramblers group activities must be cancelled from Thursday 5 November until Wednesday 2 December in accordance with the new UK government guidelines.

East Dorset Group and the rule of six

The Ramblers have produced a speedy response to the new rule of six on 10th September. As shown here we are allowed to continue to lead walks in groups of up to 30 on and after 14th September because Ramblers and Walking for Health organised group walks are categorised as “outdoor physical activity events”.

Not all our programmed walks are suitable under current conditions or a walk leader might be unable to lead a walk. Please remember to check on GWEM for last minute cancellations.

East Dorset Group

Now that the Ramblers has relaxed its requirements for group walks, East Dorset Group will be starting to run the walks shown in its programme from Wednesday 5th August.

We anticipate some last minute cancellations if a leader becomes ill or has to self isolate. We apologise for any inconvenience. We will do our best to inform you of any cancellations, which will appear on the Walks page of this website and on the individual walk's listing on the Group Walks and Event Manager. Before joining a walk we strongly advise looking at one of these pages to check as near to the time and date of each walk as you can.

East Dorset Group and Covid 19

Advice from The Ramblers can be seen here.

All Ramblers group walks have been suspended until at least the end of May 2020. We do not know when we will be able to start walking with each other again. In the hope that it will not be too long, East Dorset Group is currently assembling a July to October programme as usual.

Sadly East Dorset Group has also had to decide to cancel the 2020 Purbeck Plod.

Covid 19 walking news

All the Wessex Wanderers walks this year have now been cancelled.

Group Winter Meal

Our 2020 winter meal was held at the Bridge Hotel at Longham. Sadly the terrible weather and flooding meant that no walk was held before the meal.

Group coach trip to Bath

A full coach took us to Bath. Some walked, some explored but all had a very good day.

2019 Dorset Area Spider Walk

East Dorset Group supplied one walk for the Dorset Area spider walk and we walked from Piddletrenthide to Giant Hill where we had our picnic lunch and back again on a lovely summe’s day

Page updated 17th November 2021.
