East Dorset Group is one of six groups within Dorset Area
New Lockdown announced on 4th January
Following the latest government announcement, The Ramblers have informed us that all Ramblers walks will be suspended from Tuesday 5 January.
Up to date information can be found here.
Dorset Area AGM
The delayed Dorset Area AGm will be a Zoom meeting on Saturday 16 January 2021 at 14 00 hours Please obtain registration details and Agenda from the members’ page of the Dorset Area website.
There will be no morning walk before the AGM.
Changes to walking rules from 30th December 2020
Here is The Ramblers latest advice. Ramblers group walks in Tier 4 areas are cancelled while group led walks in Tiers 1, 2 and 3 can go ahead in the same way as they were. People walking with friends can go out with 6 people from 6 households except those in Tier 4 who can go out with only one other person.
Please note that BCP and Hampshire are now in Tier 4, which means that some of our walks will not be able to take place.
Footnotes is the newsletter produced by Dorset Area and you usually receive a copy with your issue of Rambling On. However it is currently being produced online only because of the difficulties created by the pandemic. Here is your copy of the December 2020 edition. packed with information, puzzles, a recipe and Chrismassy jokes and tales.
Social distancing on walks
The Ramblers has now issued further guidance on social distancing on walks. They have advised leaders whose walks attract more than ten to twelve walkers that their walks should be sub-divided into groups of 6. We are sure that you will give your support to the leaders of walks as they manage this rather difficult guidance.
Here is some news that is not about Covid! A new 2020 edition of the "The Dorset Jubilee Trail" has just been published. See the Dorset Area website for further information and a list of stockists.
End of lockdown, 2nd December
The Ramblers have now commented on the new regulations following the end of the second lockdown. As shown here we are allowed to continue to lead walks in groups of up to 30 on and after 2nd December because Ramblers and Walking for Health group walks are categorised as “organised, outdoor physical activity events”.
In East Dorset Group, we intend to take advantage of this and return to the programme of walks shown in your latest programme from 2nd December. Not all our programmed walks are suitable under current conditions or a walk leader might be unable to lead a walk. A walk leader may also decide they would rather have fewer than 30 people on their walk in which case there will be a booking system set up. Please remember to check on GWEM, the Group Walks and Events Manager, for last minute alterations or cancellations.
However, the Ramblers have advised us not to travel to or from any tier 3, very high alert, areas. The Dorset Council and BCP council areas will be starting as tier 2 from 2nd December.
East Dorset Group 2020 AGM
Due to current Covid-19 regulations, it will not be possible to hold our 2020 AGM in public on 17th November as stated in our programme. Please see our AGM 2020 page to find out how your committee is managing this situation.
East Dorset Group 3rd November
The advice we have received from The Ramblers is that all Ramblers group activities must be cancelled from Thursday 5 November until Wednesday 2 December in accordance with the new UK government guidelines.
All East Dorset Group walks are therefore cancelled during that period and their entries on GWEM, the Group Walks and Events Manager, will be shown as cancelled.
East Dorset Group 15th October
The government has recently announced its three tiers system. The Ramblers have now told us that none of these tiers will affect our organised outdoor physical activity exemption from the rule of six, as long as leaders continue to compile a risk assessment and keep a register of walkers for every walk. However, walkers are warned to check the current situation before travelling to a walk to ensure that they do not enter or leave very high alert areas or lockdown areas of Wales.
East Dorset Group and the rule of six
The Ramblers have produced a speedy response to the new rule of six on 10th September. As shown here we are allowed to continue to lead walks in groups of up to 30 on and after 14th September because Ramblers and Walking for Health organised group walks are categorised as “outdoor physical activity events”.
Not all our programmed walks are suitable under current conditions or a walk leader might be unable to lead a walk. Please remember to check on GWEM for last minute cancellations.
East Dorset Group
Now that the Ramblers has relaxed its requirements for group walks, East Dorset Group will be starting to run the walks shown in its programme from Wednesday 5th August.
We anticipate some last minute cancellations if a leader becomes ill or has to self isolate. We apologise for any inconvenience. We will do our best to inform you of any cancellations, which will appear on the Walks page of this website and on the individual walk's listing on the Group Walks and Event Manager. Before joining a walk we strongly advise looking at one of these pages to check as near to the time and date of each walk as you can.
East Dorset Group Mailing List
This group has a mailing list for occasional emails with urgent information such as walk cancellations or alterations and this is also now a useful way of getting in touch with members in the current situation.
If you wish to join our list please email the secretary using the contact details in your programme or at the bottom of this page, asking to join. If you wish to leave the list at any time, just telephone or email the secretary.
East Dorset Group and Covid 19
East Dorset Group walks are still suspended. The Group Committee is considering matters including Ramblers advice, whether to continue the suspension of walks and whether to send out newsletters and programmes.
East Dorset Group has decided that with such short notice of restarting group walks it is impossible for us to run walks until at least the beginning of August.
The Ramblers sent out a notice stating that group walks can start again on 1st July, with a number of conditions attached. One is that there should not be more than six people on a group walk. Your East Dorset Group Committee is currently discussing this new freedom and news of how we intend to approach this will appear on this page soon.
We have just sent out our July to October 2020 programme to as many members as we could reach by email. We are hoping to send out a print version to all members soon.
PLEASE NOTE that this does not mean our walks will restart in July. We have to await permission from The Ramblers and our programme will become active once we are allowed to follow it.
Since the latest government advice, updated information from The Ramblers can be seen here.
This means that all walks and events will be cancelled until at least the end of June and probably a lot longer.
East Dorset Group and Covid 19 - Recent
East Dorset Group has now put together a programme of walks for the July to October period. We do not know when we will be able to go out on led walks again but when we can, our programme will be available. At the moment we have no means of distributing it but as soon as we can, we will either post it to all members or email it to as many members as we can and make it available through this website.
East Dorset Group and Covid 19
Advice from The Ramblers can be seen here.
All Ramblers group walks have been suspended until at least the end of May 2020. We do not know when we will be able to start walking with each other again. In the hope that it will not be too long, East Dorset Group is currently assembling a July to October programme as usual.
Sadly East Dorset Group has also had to decide to cancel the 2020 Purbeck Plod.
Covid 19 walking news
All the Wessex Wanderers walks this year have now been cancelled.
Group Winter Meal
Our 2020 winter meal was held at the Bridge Hotel at Longham. Sadly the terrible weather and flooding meant that no walk was held before the meal.
Group coach trip to Bath
A full coach took us to Bath. Some walked, some explored but all had a very good day.
