East Dorset Group is one of seven groups within Dorset Area
Our 25 mile challenge walk and run
The Purbeck Plod was introduced in 1965 and ran yearly through to 2002. Our Group re-introduced the walk in 2008 adding the options of a 25 mile run and a 16 mile walk and in 2018 a 12 mile route was added for walkers. You can see the route summaries here or can view the full routes for the 25 and 16 mile walks and run and the 12 mile walk. For copyright reasons we cannot display maps but you can download the routes for your gps here.
The challenge isn't just in the distance. There are a lot of climbs along the way. On the 25 mile route these add up to about 4,300 feet and on the 16 mile route, they add up to about 2,700 feet.
Each year we ask East Dorset Group members to provide some assistance. Please contact us if you would like to help.
Purbeck Plod 2021
Purbeck Plod - Sunday 27 June 2021 - Cancelled
It is regretted that owing to the uncertainly regarding Covid-19 restrictions in the coming months, the East Dorset Group of the Ramblers has come to the decision not to hold the Purbeck Plod in 2021 and the event is cancelled.
It is hoped to hold the event in 2022 and it is planned to have further information will be available on this website in early 2022.

Sadly we have had to take the decision to cancel the 2020 Purbeck Plod due to take place on Sunday 21st June. Those of you who have already sent in an application form will have your money refunded.
Purbeck Plod 2019

Purbeck Plod 2018
The 2018 Purbeck Plod took place on a very hot day, 24th June. Here are the results. Congratulations to you all.
The East Dorset Group of the Ramblers have been running this event now for past ten years, with the Purbeck Plod starting over 50 years ago to raise funds for Boys’ Clubs in Bournemouth. We cannot expect entrants to come along year after year to the same event, although the Dorset Jurassic Coast and the Purbeck Hills are probably some of the most challenging and best areas for walking and running on the South Coast. We are looking for ideas to make the event even more attractive, possibly with a change to the shorter route. Your ideas are valuable to us, please email them to .
Purbeck Plod 2017
2017 results. Congratulations to you all.
The Purbeck Plod took place on 25th June 2017. Weather can never be predicted and so it proved for this year’s Purbeck Plod. A few days before the event it was extremely hot with the temperature reaching 30 degrees C and even higher, by the Tuesday after the event it was raining continuously for the best part of two days. Sunday 25 June 2017 wasn’t perfect, the day started off very cloudy with a strong wind, although it improved throughout the day and late finishers enjoyed a beautiful evening.
118 walkers and runners took part in this year’s event with 112 completing their chosen 25 or 16 miles. Numbers were a little lower than normal, but with other events such as Glastonbury that weekend, it is not so surprising.
We thank all who entered in this year’s event and to the few who entered and were unable to turn up, we hope to see you in the future.
To our devoted band of volunteers, without you we would be unable to organise this event at all, many, many thanks.
